My hometown, the Historic Village of Waterford was recently featured in The Washington Post. It’s a lovely article that reverently describes the village as “a remarkably intact example of an early 1T9th-century rural village surrounded by historic farmland.”
Of course this isn’t the first time that a big media outlet has focused attention on our little village. I read articles like this with both pride and a tinge of amusement. I like to think that both as a Realtor and an active member of the community, I’ve played a small part in helping to preserve our unique way of life. At the same time, if the outside world knew the details of the politics and drama required to “stop time” just 30 miles west of our nation’s capitol — well, let me just say it would probably make for a amusing sitcom.
Despite the politics, I love Waterford and the life my family has lived here. It is an oasis in a desert of suburban sprawl. As fall approaches and we gather our strength to host the 80th annual Waterford Fair, I’m grateful for the village, for my neighbors and for the generations of Waterford folk who worked to preserve this community.
